Facebook Fan Pages: Do’s and Don’ts

Savvy, budget-conscious entrepreneurs have shrewdly identified Facebook as the perfect venue to market their goods and services to their target audiences for a fraction of traditional costs.

Now, it’s your turn.

You’ve decided to get with the times and launch a Facebook Fan Page to market your services. But where do you start? What are the rules? If you’re lost in the social media wilderness, let this guide start you on your new, exciting path.

In Part One of this series, we give you a couple tips on what NOT to do in order to make your Fan Page a success.

DON’T Spam Newsfeeds

Facebook is the new community centre, a digital liming spot for friends and family to catch up, old talk and maco photo albums. Imagine if someone came into this space with a loudspeaker, blaring repetitive, irrelevant banalities. Constant, irrelevant status updates and posts from businesses drown out the conversation and are sources of constant irritation for users.

Social network denizens don’t come to these sites to be marketed to and are quickly turned off by obvious efforts. Unless your business is breaking news, keep your status updates to a limit of two or three a day.

DON’T Fight Fire with Fire

Sometimes the internet can resemble a harsh desert wilderness where there are no rules for societal conventions. From behind the safety of a computer screen and keyboard, people can feel empowered to use more abusive language than they would in real life, and share exactly how they feel about your company. First, take a deep breath and don’t take it personally. Your kneejerk reaction may be to delete those comments from the wall, but don’t act on impulse. Assess how offensive the post is. If it is a simple criticism or complaint about your company, don’t delete it. Respond politely to the criticism, and move the conversation off the wall. Provide an email address where further feedback can be sent, and address the issue in that manner.

Don’t be a doormat. Housekeeping rules for your page must clearly state how trolls, spammers and offensive posts that include cursing and other unacceptable language will be dealt with. You may choose to delete those comments right away, and even go so far as to ban the user from your page and report them to Facebook.

Stay tuned for Part Two of this series where we give you tips and tricks that you can apply to your page to guarantee its ultimate success!
