Loving my local logo

PTSC

We always talk about the logos of international brands such as FedEx and Nike, however I cannot recall any discussion on local logos except when there is a logo competition. Over the weekend I took the bus to San Fernando and while at the terminus, my eyes focused on the logo of the Public Transport Service Corporation and I thought, “That’s a good logo.”

Wikipedia describes the logo as a graphic mark or emblem commonly used by commercial enterprises, organisations and even individuals to aid and promote instant public recognition. Why have I singled out PTSC’s logo? Because it does as aforementioned and also, a foreign eye seeing it will have a very good idea of what the company does by just observing it. Instantly the colours of the Trinidad and Tobago flag is evident. The outer rings form a steering wheel and within them are evenly spaced rods radiating outward from a central hub, forming the spokes of a wheel. The letters PTSC are placed on the “T” of the rods, somewhat like the cardinal points of a compass, suggesting that this company covers East, West, North and South of the country. To me, this is excellent communication. Probably the image could do with a little modernising. Other than that, it is brilliant.

I am amazed that I have never noticed the intricacies of this logo. I guess, like many of my fellow citizens, it is one of the many things that is ours that we see every day, but do not see.

Eric, I get a bit of a nautical feel from that logo, it looks like the steering wheel of an ocean liner.  The local logos that jump into my head are: Bermudez (Mr Wink), Solo (cursive font style), Carib and Angostuta (which has been modernised over the years) – but Mr Wink wins the logo derby for me, dr
