Perfume and Pumpkin?

I was really surprised to see Dopson’s Roti Shop selling earrings and perfumes right next to their sada roti when I visited this morning.

This is the conversation that probably took place among the Dopson’s management.  We have space and women come here, so why don’t we sell them something they like to buy. So how about you try on an earring as you wait for your curry duck roti?

The customer is the one who gives us permission to do stuff and I don’t think that Dopson’s has permission to sell scents except that of their wonderful curry.  Maria is much more likely to buy a tawa or a deya from Dopson’s than she is to try on some new studs.

The cheese cake did not work and neither will the woman’s fineries.

Hey Dennis – I would be interested to see how long the side business lasts and if the merchandise that you see turns over – is it just a valentine’s gambit? While it does not seem like a natural fit – I agree with you, human behavior can prove us wrong. Having the captive customer for 5-10 minutes while awaiting lunch is a good sales window, and if the offering actually catches the eye, (and women are always in shopping mode), the prospective customer is not fazed by the social judgement inherent in the situation and the price point is half the cost of a roti (at least the costume jewellery), then they might get some traction. Can you let us know if it seems to be working? Also, what about the not-so-classy men who need to buy a V-day gift .. An easy opportunity to buy a missus (inside or outside) something. Maybe this disappears next week and comes back for Carnival and Christmas in different forms. Keep us updated and we’ve been missing the posts. Loregnard jr.
