10 excuses we make on the job.

Thinking about our own organizations and our own jobs — what are things we just make excuses for instead of taking ownership of things?

  1. That’s not my department.  That’s not my job.  I don’t care how y’all are organised I have come to a company not a department.
  2. Someone else did not do their job so I could not do mine.  Misery does love company or is it an alibi.  If you are not getting what you need scream (not always literally but sometimes that may be necessary)
  3. I emailed them clear instructions.  And that means my work is done.  An e-mail is only an effective communication if it reaches the intended target on a timely basis and its meaning is acknowledged.
  4. There was a lot of traffic this morning.  Ok, let’s all listen in.  Traffic is permanent.  It’s going nowhere.
  5. I am waiting on the boss to approve.  Give the boss a deadline and if she does not meet it tell her the consequences if you don’t get a decision.  Bosses are not untouchables.  Make them accountable.  If they fire you then you should thank them for releasing you from hell.
  6. The internet is down.  That’s a good time to get on the phone or to work on that project plan.  Internet down could be a blessing, not always a curse.
  7. Current gone.  No electricity?  Take the team to a nearby park and hold a brainstorming session or just bond with your fellow staffers.  It should not be a sign to start making plans for your return home.
  8. It was not my decision.  I did not vote for doing that.  When a decision is made you must carry it out as if it was your idea even if you were a dissenting voice.  (I don’t agree but it’s Company Policy)
  9. I was waiting on information from Mary.  Climb the accountability ladder, rather than making excuses, own the problem.
