Fay Ann – Zigging when others zag.

Nigel Campbell whose opinion I value had this to say about the new Raze video: “So all Fay Ann wanted to do was make this video in the snow?  It’s the same 20 yards of roadway by the snow-covered roadway with a fence she is on. No synchronization with the song and mouth. It must be a budgetary constraint because I know VP Records has funded better videos than this for their artist. Underwhelming.”

Arleen Khan, whom I do not know, had a different view on FB:  “I love that video; is something different from feathers and a big truck playing music and people wining on d’ road”.

Sheldon Wilson, another FBer chimed in; “This is where d music have to go, ppl need to understand that Trinidad don’t buy any music, so after Carnival that’s it for your tune.  This is not about Trinidad, this is about marketing ur music to the world in a different way.. Ppl need to understand that most of d’ world don’t care about our Carnival or our music.”

The majority of the comments on FB has not been in favor of this weird video production.

“If you have an idea that no one hates, everyone will forget it. No one dislikes vanilla, but you can get that from anyone, anywhere” said Linda Kaplan Thaler.

The video is bizarre and that’s why I think it will be seen in the forest full of the same trees.  I like the strategy, even as the execution could have been more overwhelming!

I wish people would stop speaking about the Carnival issue and just be honest that the video itself was not poorly produced but horribly so… produced, shot and edited. This video may be talked about locally -but to be honest -the world out there still would not cling to it because the video itself needs to stand up against the very best as well. This is a poor home/neighbour/friend product…and they will be so ‘kind’. The curiousity of her regional fans/haters, can bring the viewership (YT -numbers) to a good place, however the video will not and does not sell or promote the song well.

The video, which is hosted on the VP Records Youtube channel has gotten more than 3 times as many dislikes (thumbs down) as opposed to likes (thumbs up) on YouTube. With 4 day of circulation, there has been less than 60,000 views which ain’t bad for a new song/video in the marketplace. 7 months ago, when the song dropped, until now, music aggregator “JulianspromosTV” registered nearly 900,000 views, and both VP records and JuliansPromosTV have similar number of subscribers to their respective channels. (subscribers get notices when new videos appear getting a heads up before the general YouTube viewer.) The rate of viewing the official video is greater and could lead to more views if this goes viral based on negative reviews. That may be a desired goal of a record company; more eyes and ears looking and listening, and potentially engaging commercially.

Al in all, there seems to be a unanimity on the poor marketing quality of the video. More so, Fay Ann’s responses ignores a general rule for artists: never disappoint your fans or diminish their opinion. Her response to the Trinidad Express leaves much to be desired: “As far as I am concerned I am happy with the video and have no time for negativity…Let my Trini people spew negativity if they choose; I am not bothered.”
