10 things new Marketing Grads should know.

  1. You don’t know anything about marketing.  Your learning has just started.
  2. You need to find yourself a mentor.  (go for substance over image)
  3. Money should not be your priority at this time.  Hint: Go for learning over cha ching.
  4. Start general and then specialise.  Your goal must be to become famous for one thing.
  5. Remember marketing is not advertising.
  6. The best way to learn is to do grunge work.  Get your hands dirty and do stuff that’s beneath your dignity.
  7. Live in the field.  Take up residence in Hilo, in rum shops or anywhere your company’s customers are.
  8. You need to keep learning.  The internet makes it easy.  Read at least one marketing book a quarter.
  9. Your emotional intelligence is more important than your technical intelligence.  Marketing is essentially ‘people business”.
  10. You must get involved in your community.  You have a responsibility to make the world a better place.
